DESINFORMATION IN THE DIGITAL AGE

ABSTRACT: The article analyzes the phenomenon of disinformation and its repercussions on politics and society in general. It seeks, at first, to define the concept of disinformation, dissociating it from other types of false or inaccurate information. It observes that the phenomenon has increased in proportion with the development and popularization of social networks, which have allowed any individual with access to the Internet to be the creator and disseminator of informational content. The exponential increase in the sharing of deliberately false information brought, as a consequence, a “decline of truth” in the public debate, throwing us into what has already been called the Post-Truth Era. Fundamental to fully understanding the problem of misinformation and seeking solutions to it is to understand why people so readily believe false information. Research in psychology has brought significant contributions to the understanding of the phenomenon. Misinformation has become particularly damaging in the fields of public health and politics. The text concludes with observations on ways to deal with the severe problem of misinformation.
